{"id":2824,"date":"2018-03-22T16:02:29","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T07:02:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hrcjapan.com\/new-japanese-sports-for-2020-olympics\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T11:35:05","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T02:35:05","slug":"new-japanese-sports-for-2020-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrcjapan.com\/en\/new-japanese-sports-for-2020-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"New Japanese Sports for 2020 Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_34896\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34896\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/davidorban\/2733881353\/https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/davidorban\/2733881353\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34896\" src=\"http:\/\/japaninfoswap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/geta-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Olympic athlete waits at a starting line<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The committee in charge of sports nomination for the 2020 Olympics today announced a raft of new sports and rule changes to give the Japan Games a more local flavor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am every excited to announce today, that the 2020 Olympic Games is gearing up to be the best installment of the games yet,&#8221; said Suitachisuke Yongatsu, head of the For Olympic Organization Licensing Sub-committee (FOOLS). &#8220;Japan is a nation unlike any other, and to this end we have come to the decision that our sports should reflect this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The decision is likely to be contentious within the international sporting community as the changes are likely to heavily favor Japanese participants and some contestants have already voiced their concerns, with Chinese gymnast\u00a0S\u00ec Yu\u00e8 Y\u012b R\u00ec, Latvian shot-putter Baland\u017eio Pirmoji and Welsh sprinter\u00a0Ebrill Gyntaf all making their opinions known on twitter.<\/p>\n<h2>2020 Olympic Event Rule Changes:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Participants taking part in the <strong>100 meters<\/strong> will be required to wear alternative footwear, with spikes being swapped for <strong>wooden geta sandals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The<strong> izakaya marathon<\/strong> will replace the regular marathon, with each mile point marked by a Japanese restaurant in which contestants must <strong>drink a highball and eat a plate of karaage<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Contestants in <strong>all cycling events<\/strong> will be required to to ride <strong>mamachari bicycles<\/strong> laden down with three bags of groceries and a three year old child on the back. All breaks must squeak deafeningly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beach volleyball<\/strong> will remain essentially unchanged, except that contestants will have to shout <strong>&#8216;Atsu! Atsu! Atsu!&#8217;<\/strong> each time that they step on the hot sand.<\/li>\n<li>All <strong>swimming events<\/strong> will be held in specially designed 50m onsen baths. <strong>Participants must be naked<\/strong>. Expected to the best spectated event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2020 Olympic Event New Sports:<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gullevek\/159211033\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34936\" src=\"http:\/\/japaninfoswap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Train-Crush-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>&#8216;subway squeeze&#8217;<\/strong> is a new a sport where teams must fill a subway compartment with as many people as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Another new sport is the <strong>&#8216;lunchtime queue&#8217;<\/strong>, where contestants must queue outside of a restaurant at lunch time. Current world record holder is Shunsuke Amano, who managed to wait seven months and 14 days outside of a soba restaurant before giving up and going to Sushiro instead.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>&#8216;ojisan&#8217; triathlon<\/strong> is a competition reserved for athletes over 60 years of age. Its three stages include the race to the front of a supermarket queue, the last remaining seat on a train and finally a table in a busy coffee shop. Extra points are awarded for use of elbows and displaying a complete disregard for others around them.
