Enjoy Nagoya\u2019s Famous Cochin Chicken"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly before I first came to Japan, I was at a friend\u2019s wedding party, and knowing of my impending trip, the bride had set me at the table next to a Japanese woman. As I peppered her with the usual questions about my soon-to-be home, she noted, quite matter of factly, \u201cone of Nagoya\u2019s delicacies is raw chicken.\u201d That\u2019s not only dangerous, I told her; it\u2019s disgusting. \u201cNot at all,\u201d she replied. \u201cNagoya is known for its special breed of chicken and prepared just right; it\u2019s delicious.\u201d Is that so? I enquired, offering my best polite smile, all the while thinking that this woman was crazy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, do you know what? She wasn\u2019t. (Editors note, raw chicken is dangerous but tasty if you are willing to run that risk.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Cochin chicken?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the highest-regarded chicken breeds in Japan, Nagoya Cochin chicken, goes back 160 years when the local ruling Owari clan sought to breed Chinese Cochin chickens with their own local variety. The result is a chicken known for its dark meat, chewy texture, umami taste, and rich, flavorful aroma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be prepared in various ways, such as in a nabe hotpot, grilled yakitori, an egg, and chicken rice bowl called oyakodon \u2013 the eggs are also famed aforementioned raw sashimi.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43640\" src=\"https:\/\/morethanrelo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Cochin-Oyakodon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"753\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nagoya Cochin is, like Kobe beef, a dish best saved for special occasions, but should the mood take you for some superlative chicken, below are a few places worth checking out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cochin Chicken in Nagoya<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torikai<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specializing primarily in Nagoya cuisine, Torikai is a chain of restaurants found throughout the city. But, the branch on the west side of Nagoya station is perhaps the easiest to access.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A casual restaurant with private rooms should you so require, recommended dishes include tebasaki wings marinated in spices and red wine and an oyakodon that was for three consecutive years the winner of the All Japan Donburi Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>Where<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Nagoya, Nakamura Ward, Noritake, 1 Chome-7-12 5 Sun Life Noritake (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Torikai\/@35.1728508,136.8778541,15z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x9b52da8970cdcae!8m2!3d35.1728776!4d136.8778388\">map<\/a>)<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Tel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <a class=\"_7c6GgQ6n _37QDe3gr\" href=\"tel:+81 52-452-3737\">+81 52-452-3737<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kululu<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Also, a stone&#8217;s throw from Nagoya Station, Kululu is a Nagoya Cochin specialist and should be the first place on your list if you want to try the chicken sashimi. However, if you&#8217;re not that brave, their version of sukiyaki &#8211; with chicken rather than beef &#8211; is not to be missed, and the same goes for their &#8216;purin&#8217; dessert made from Cochin eggs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43641\" src=\"https:\/\/morethanrelo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Cochin-chicken-sashimi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Previously the decor was very traditional, making for a wonderful atmosphere, like stepping back in time. With a long association with Nagoya Cochin, Ichio is a beautiful, stylish restaurant with traditional decor.<\/p>\n<p>Head there in the evening, and you can enjoy one of their superlative course menus or the tebasaki that is perhaps the perfect example of this Nagoya cuisine.
