From seasonal events to celebrations specific to local neighborhoods, there are plenty of exciting and unique occasions to entertain residents and visitors alike. Here is a selection of the best festivals for the coming period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toukasan Festival&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest events in the Hiroshima calendar, the Toukasan festival takes place for 3 days over the first weekend in June and signals the beginning of summer. It\u2019s a 400-year-old celebration and honours the local temple god, Touka Daimyojin. Also known as the Yukata festival as it encourages attendees to wear the traditional yukata dress, the festival takes place in downtown Hiroshima and you can expect food, drink, and craft stalls as well as a range of performances.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Website:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/toukasan.jp\/toukasan-grand-festival\/history-of-the-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">https:\/\/toukasan.jp\/toukasan-grand-festival\/history-of-the-festival\/<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hiroshima Flower Festival&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Hiroshima\u2019s biggest annual events, the flower festival takes place over 3 days each May in and around Hiroshima Peace Park. It regularly attracts over 5,000 participants and you can expect a parade along the boulevard, various competitions, a wide range of performances (including the likes of music and skate performances), and plenty of food and drink options.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Website:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiroshima-ff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">https:\/\/www.hiroshima-ff.com\/<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A rather more serious affair, this event happens on \u201cA-Bomb Day\u201d, the 6<sup>th<\/sup> of August each year, to commemorate the victims of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima (and Nagasaki) at the end of World War II. The event takes place in the morning in front of the Memorial Cenotaph in Hiroshima Peace park, involving the laying of flowers, prayers, a peace declaration, and a release of doves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The park itself has been turned into a memorial, including preserved remains and a museum to educate visitors on the effects of the bombing of the city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Website:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city.hiroshima.lg.jp\/english\/peace\/1029871\/1009572.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">https:\/\/www.city.hiroshima.lg.jp\/english\/peace\/1029871\/1009572.html<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Miyajima Kangen-sai Festival&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the oldest and most important festivals in Hiroshima, this takes place each year on the island of Miyajima. It involves the moving of the portable Itsukushima shrine \u2013 iconic on the island \u2013 which is transported by boat while surrounding musicians play traditional music. The festival has taken place since the 8<sup>th<\/sup> century and takes place on the 17<sup>th<\/sup> day of the sixth month in the lunar calendar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Website:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miyajima.or.jp\/english\/event\/event_kangen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">https:\/\/www.miyajima.or.jp\/english\/event\/event_kangen.html<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innoshima Suigun Pirate Festival&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This free annual festival towards the end of August commemorates the Murakami pirates that commanded the Seto Inland Sea many centuries ago.
