Hundreds of lights create an impressive scene after dark, while fireworks have also traditionally formed part of the celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The landmark\u00a0Kumamoto Castle\u00a0provides the backdrop for seasonal festivals and cultural events. The\u00a0Kumamoto Castle Festival\u00a0<\/a>includes spring and autumn programs, although the precise schedule and activities vary each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Visitors can expect a mixture of traditional and modern entertainment. Previous programs have featured taiko drumming, martial arts demonstrations, Noh performances, music, local food, and other cultural activities. The spring events are particularly appealing when the area around the castle is filled with cherry blossoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For something quieter and more atmospheric, visit Kumamoto City during the\u00a0Mizuakari Festival<\/a>, typically held in\u00a0October. Thousands of candles and lanterns illuminate the streets and waterways around Kumamoto Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First held in 2004, the community-run event uses bamboo lanterns and other displays to transform central Kumamoto after sunset.
