The festival celebrates the\u00a0legend of\u00a0two lovers, represented by the Altair (Cowherd Star) and Vega (Weaver Star), tragically separated by the Milky Way and allowed to meet only once a year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web-jpn.org\/kidsweb\/folk\/tanabata\/index.html\">More about the legend of Tanabata <\/a><\/p>\n<p>This matsuri\u00a0marks the beginning of summer in many places across Japan, and you can find distinctive tanazaku displays, often described as \u201cJapanese Christmas Trees\u201d and\u00a0Fukinagashi\u00a0Streamers decorations throughout Japan for either July or August (depending on the region).<\/p>\n<h2>Tanzaku &#8220;Wish Trees&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E4%B8%83%E5%A4%95#mediaviewer\/%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AB:Tanabata.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-25481\" src=\"http:\/\/japaninfoswap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/tanabata_tanzuku-150x150.gif\" alt=\"tanabata_tanzuku\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong>People celebrate tanabata by writing wishes on small pieces of paper called \u201ctanzaku,\u201d and tying them to a decorated bamboo tree. They then pray for their wish to come true. The bamboo and decorations are destroyed after the festival, usually by being set afloat on a river or in an bonfire.<\/p>\n<p>Tanabata is celebrated in many Asian countries and has roots deep in Chinese history. In Japan the celebrations are localized with different regions having developed their own styles and traditions over time, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sendaitanabata.com\/en\/\">Sendai\u2019s style<\/a> is the most famous of the varieties.<\/p>\n<h2>Fukinagashi\u00a0Streamers<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E4%BB%99%E5%8F%B0%E4%B8%83%E5%A4%95#mediaviewer\/%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AB:Sendai_Tanabata_Festival_2010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-25482\" src=\"http:\/\/japaninfoswap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/sendai_tanabata-150x150.gif\" alt=\"sendai_tanabata\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Another distinctive Tanabata decoration are &#8216;fukinagashi.&#8217;\u00a0These colorful streamers are \u00a0hung along streets, or in shopping arcades to represent the strings Orihime, one of the lovers, uses in her weaving.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Tanabata Festivals Near Nagoya<\/h1>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Ozone Tanabata Festival<\/h2>\n<p>The festival is held at the OZ Mall and Ozone shopping arcade near Ozone Station on the Meijo subway line. The festival features a selection of arts and crafts and a flea market, obon dancing, taiko performances, and street performers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">July\u00a029\/ 30\/ 31, 2016<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Get off Ozone Station on the Meijo subway line and use exit 3<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ozone-ave.com\/event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.ozone-ave.com\/event<\/a>\u00a0(JP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Endoji Tanabata Festival<\/h2>\n<p>The festival is held at the Endoji Shopping Arcade in Nagoya\u2019s Nishi-ku area. This is probably the smallest Tanabatta on the list, but it is in a cool location that not many take the time to see. Endoji is an old Japanese style shopping arcade near the Nagoya International Center. This festival will feature your standard variety of food and game stalls, as well as the decoration of this cool old area.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">July 27\/ 28\/ 29\/ 30\/ 31 2016\u00a011:00-21:00<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Get off at Kokusai Center Station on the Sakuradori line and take exit 2. From there the festival is a 5 minute walk to the north.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nagoya-info.jp\/event\/center\/58.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.nagoya-info.jp\/event\/center\/58.html<\/a>\u00a0(JP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ichinomiya Tanabata Festival<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6859\" src=\"http:\/\/japaninfoswap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tanabata_yukata-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"tanabata_yukata\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>The largest Tanabata festival in the Nagoya area is the annual Ichinomiya Tanabata Festival.
