The festival continues to be held annually on a Sunday in May, hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) and Nagoya International School (NIS).

The Walkathon’s primary purpose is to join the international community with Japanese friends and companies to

Raise money to support local NPOs and charitable organizations in Chubu

Encourage a spirit of giving and volunteerism in the greater community

Promote international understanding and cooperation in the greater community

The Chubu Walkathon is very popular with the region’s foreign communities for the range of bands, “foods from home,” volunteer opportunities, and fun, but it becomes increasingly popular with Japanese people every year. Bringing the Japanese community in is a high priority for the event and has helped grow attendance from a few hundred participants in 1991 to its current size.

The money raised by the Chubu Walkathon is distributed and used by local NPOs and charitable organizations that apply for the funds. In 2011, for example, a local orphanage applied for funds to rebuild a staircase, and another facility asked for a new TV and video game console for children living there.

“The Walkathon also supports students who grew up in children’s homes through the Chubu Children’s Fund (CCF), an entity that grew out of the 25th Anniversary of Walkathon, providing scholarship money to help students continue their education beyond high school.

These children’s homes were some of the very first recipients of Walkathon support. This support developed into the Chubu Children’s Fund, which targets a particular need: the need for a good education. A good education will help these children joy a more stable and happy life after leaving the loving support of their children’s home,” explains Erin.

“And this year, we have even seen four of our students graduate from higher education; it is so exciting to see them grow into their lives thanks partly to the Walkathon community.”

The amounts given from Walkathon funds are usually small, 200,000 yen or less, and go for specific projects. Charitable organizations that have a need can make a project plan and budget and then submit the proposal to the organizing committee of the Walkathon, where the funds are distributed. You can find information on charities and groups supported in previous years on the Walkathon website.

Get involved in the Chubu Walkathon

Of course, the best way to get involved with Walkathon is by coming along, buying a ticket, and ordering one of the t-shirts designed by a competition winner from Nagoya International School. Even if you can’t make the event, you can still get a t-shirt delivered to you by ordering here wherever you are in the world. In addition, there is a crowdfunding page where you can make further donations to many good causes.

Connect with the Chubu Walkathon and International Charity Festival

www.ChubuWalkathon.com
www.twitter.com/chubuwalkathon
www.youtube.com/user/nagoyawalkathon
www.facebook.com/chubuwalkathon

The Chubu Walkathon is an exciting event that raises money for charity and offers a great family-friendly day […]

[65,68,42
156,83,69,77,167,100,148,160
post-6144","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-events","category-festivals","category-nagoya-2","tag-accj","tag-aichi-prefecture","tag-event","tag-may","tag-nagakute-city","tag-nagoya-city","tag-nagoya-festivals","tag-spring
["GET
